Community Health Extension Workers (CHEW) Programme
The CHEW programme is a specialized professional training course designed to produce competent health practitioners. These professionals serve as the backbone of Primary Health Care (PHC) delivery, bridging the gap between clinical settings and the grassroots community.
Core Competencies & Training
The curriculum is designed to equip students with the essential knowledge and professional ethics required for high-impact public health service. Key areas of focus include:
· Maternal and Child Health: Ensuring safe motherhood and child survival.
· Disease Prevention & Control: Managing immunization services and infectious disease outbreaks.
· Community Engagement: Expertise in community mobilization, home visitation, and health education.
· Clinical Support: Proficiency in first aid, basic clinical procedures, nutrition, and environmental health.
Programme Duration & Structure
The programme spans three (3) years of intensive training, blending academic rigor with practical application:
· Theory & Lab Work: In-depth classroom instruction and laboratory exercises.
· Fieldwork & Outreach: Practical community-based assignments.
· Clinical Postings: Supervised clinical experience in established healthcare facilities.
Career Pathways & Impact
Graduates are uniquely qualified to strengthen health systems in rural and underserved areas. Career opportunities include roles in:
· Primary Health Care Centres and Health Posts.
Private Clinics and General Hospitals.
Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) focused on public health.
Community-based health and nutrition programmes.
Professional Advancement
Upon successful completion, graduates are eligible for professional registration and can pursue further career progression in Community Health or Public Health disciplines, in accordance with the Community Health Practitioners Registration Board of Nigeria
(CHPRBN) regulations.
Minimum of C6 in English, Mathematics, Biology/Health Sci Chemistry and Physics in O'Level
Medical Laboratory Science is a cornerstone of modern healthcare. Professionals in this field perform critical diagnostic analyses on human and animal samples—including blood, tissue, and body fluids—to empower physicians with the data needed to detect, diagnose, and treat diseases accurately.
In recent years, the profession has expanded beyond the bench to include the production of biological products and the fabrication of specialized diagnostic equipment. Often described as the "Bedrock of Modern Medicine," the medical laboratory removes the "trial and error" from healthcare. Without the precise investigations conducted in the lab, medical practice would be based on mere assumptions rather than scientific facts.
Professional Standards & Regulation
To ensure the highest level of patient care, all practitioners are trained and licensed by the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN). This regulatory body ensures that every test performed on human or animal tissues meets global standards for accuracy and reliability.
Areas of Specialization
Medical Laboratory Science is a multi-disciplinary field offering a wide range of opportunities for diversification and specialization, including:
Clinical Chemistry (Chemical Pathology): Analyzing chemical components in body fluids.
Haematology & Blood Group Serology: The study of blood cells and transfusion science.
Histopathology: The microscopic examination of tissues to study manifestations of disease.
Medical Microbiology & Parasitology: Identifying infectious agents like bacteria, viruses, and parasites.
Key Roles in Healthcare Delivery
The laboratory professional plays a vital role in the comprehensive healthcare system by:
Confirming a clinician’s provisional diagnosis.
Ruling out incorrect diagnoses to save time and resources.
Detecting diseases early, often before symptoms appear.
Monitoring the effectiveness of ongoing therapy and treatment.
Course Duration and Structure
The Medical Laboratory Technician programme is a three-year (3) course designed to provide a balanced and comprehensive education. To ensure students are fully prepared for the healthcare industry, the curriculum integrates three core learning environments:
Theoretical Learning: Comprehensive classroom lectures covering the scientific foundations of the profession.
Laboratory Practicals: Hands-on training in controlled environments to master diagnostic techniques.
Clinical Postings: Real-world experience in hospital settings under the direct supervision of qualified, licensed Medical Laboratory Technician.
This structured approach ensures that every graduate possesses the practical skills and theoretical knowledge necessary to provide high-quality healthcare delivery and diagnostic accuracy.
QUALIFICATION FOR ADMISSION
A minimum of five (5) credits is required including Mathematics, English Language, Biology, Physics and Chemistry respectively.
